A plumbing emergency in Mascot

It was the week before New Year. Rose had a load of laundry to do before she could even begin to concentrate on the guest list and the menu for Christmas dinner. But, right now, her mind was far, far away. More precisely, she was thinking of a persistent blocked drain upstairs.

Her townhouse was about 22 years old. Two years ago, they had remodeled the bathroom on the top floor, putting in a bathtub and changing the tiles. A few months after that, they had noticed that there was a blockage in the pipeline, somewhere between the sink and the drain line from the new bathtub.

She had noticed the blockage when the sink started draining slowly two years ago. So, Rose had rolled up her sleeves, removed the drain cover and used the plunger. She had then cleaned away the bits of hair she had found there. After that, she had removed the trap in pipe that was just under the sink and cleaned it out. There was enough debris in there to block the drain. So, she believed that the blocked drain would have cleared out.

But, when she filled the sink, she saw that water was still draining pretty slowly. She tried a few tricks, like pouring hot water and dumping a large bucket of water so that the volume would push the blockage away. Nothing seemed to work. But, sometime in the course of the day, for whatever reason, water started draining away at the normal speed.

Rose was happy that she had taken matters into her own hands and saved them the money and the trouble of calling a plumber.

After that, the sink would develop the same problem once every few months. The problem went away when she used the plunger.

This morning, the sink had begun draining slowly again. ‘Time for the old plunger’, she thought.

A minute into the exercise, Rose heard a whooshing sound. The drain block had released. Water began draining normally.

Smiling to herself, Rose poured some more water into the sink. After it drained away, she decided that she could take her bath.

But when she reached the tub upstairs, her elation turned to agony. There was sewer backing up in her tub. It had come up through the drain when she had plunged the sink. Rose rushed down to get the plunger. She plunged the bathtub for more than half an hour. Nothing happened. The water in the tub was not draining. Something was stuck solid in the drain.

What could she do? It was the week before New Year, a time when plumbers were busy. The odds were very much against her getting the plumbing problem sorted out in time.

Since she had no choice, she decided to call her plumber from Mascot. These guys were known for their prompt service. That was what made them a hit in the neighborhood. They were much in demand in St Peters, Randwick, Kensington, Coogee, Eastlakes and Botany.

Rose was surprised when the plumber agreed to visit her. She was even more surprised when he came on the dot and repaired her blocked drain in less than half an hour. He said the blockage was caused by a large amount of tree roots further down the sewer line. He got out his water jetter and blasted the tree roots from the sewer. He mentioned that there was a section of sewer that was broken further down the sewer line and this should be replaced, he even gave a quote and showed Rose the problem through the CCTV. She was so impressed with the initiative of the plumber she went ahead with the dig up on the spot. What pleased her most was the bill. As always, they had put in a very reasonable charge.
